Gynecomastia is the medical name for excessive breast tissue in males. Producing a feminine breast appearance, gynecomastia can be embarrassing, causing both emotional and physical discomfort and leading many men to seek ways to reduce fat and tissue in their chests. Fortunately, some methods can help, though they may not be 100 percent effective.

Diet and Exercise

Eating a well-balanced diet and getting plenty of exercise is necessary for weight management. One of the most common causes of gynecomastia is weight fluctuations. Minimizing these will help to reduce the risks of developing gynecomastia and may assist in reducing its appearance once it develops.

Yo-yo and fad diets might do more harm than good. The best way to maintain a healthy weight is by selecting a diet you enjoy and sticking with it. If you struggle with finding healthy food choices, consider working with a dietician who can help you find the best diet for your needs.

Drug and Alcohol Use

Another leading cause of gynecomastia is drug and alcohol use. Illicit drugs, including marijuana, are linked to the development of male breasts. So too is anabolic steroid use. Alcohol consumption is also linked to gynecomastia, making it essential to reduce your intake if you drink frequently.

Some studies have found an increase in the number of gynecomastia patients in states where marijuana has been legalized. Marijuana is an estrogen stimulator and has been shown to decrease testosterone production. Add to this that, as a depressant, marijuana can impact physical motivation and abilities, and you have the perfect combination for developing male breasts.

Medications

Some medications, including certain androgen blockers, antidepressants, and prescription narcotics can increase risks for gynecomastia. Interestingly, some OTC medications, including the heartburn medications ranitidine and omeprazole, are also linked to the development of gynecomastia.

Some herbs, particularly those that stimulate estrogen production, such as ginkgo, ginseng, don quai, and evening primrose, can also encourage breast tissue growth in men.
