How long does it take to recover from a mommy makeover?

Recovery from a mommy makeover is slightly different for every woman. Factors including the number and type of procedures that were used for your makeover, your body’s natural response to surgery, and your commitment to following pre and postoperative care instructions will all play a role in your experience and final results. The average recovery time is two to four weeks. Some women may need more, a few may need less.

As a general rule, you can expect some fatigue, dizziness, and difficulties performing routine tasks for a few days following mommy makeover surgery. It is important to have an adult who can assist with household duties during the first five to seven days of recovery. Even if you are feeling up to more activity, it is best to rest and relax for the first week after surgery. This will help set the foundation for a more rewarding experience.

Swelling, bruising, and some discomfort may be present during the first week of recovery. Discomfort often responds well to OTC medications. We can also provide medications when needed to help address pain. Swelling can be limited by wearing a compression garment and taking several walks during the day. Walks encourage circulation and improve recovery response.

Resuming Work and Normal Activities

You should be able to return to light-duty work within five to seven days following mommy makeover surgery. If your job is physically demanding, you may need to wait for up to two months before resuming all normal duties.

Moderate exercise can be incredibly useful in the latter stages of recovery, serving to improve circulation, enhance muscle tone, and set the stage for more rigorous exercise once healing is completed. Advanced and demanding forms of exercise can be resumed within eight weeks, allowing you to further define, enhance, and enjoy the results of your procedure.

If labiaplasty was included in your procedure, refraining from sexual activity may be necessary for up to two months as well, but nothing is set in stone. During your routine follow-up visits, your plastic surgeon will assess how recovery is progressing and provide you with individualized recommendations on when it’s safe to return to normal.

Your Role in Recovery

Your role in mommy makeover recovery is following your plastic surgeon’s pre and postoperative instructions. This may include:

  • Ceasing certain medications, supplements, and herbs
  • Refraining from any use of nicotine
  • Limiting physical activity
  • Wearing compression garments
  • Making it to all follow-up appointments

These steps will help keep you safe and comfortable during your mommy makeover recovery. Your plastic surgeon will be able to give you personalized recommendations based on factors unique to your anatomy or procedure. Be sure to follow these precisely to help ensure the best experience possible.
