Dr. Bates is dedicated to getting to know all of his patients personally and begins each consultation with a couple of questions that help him learn who they are and what they value.
“I don’t just jump in and start doing a physical exam and talking about surgical incisions, complications and outcomes,” he says. “You really want to try to get to know your patients as people first.”
He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and joined the Altos Oaks Plastic Surgery Department of Plastic Surgery in 2007 at the conclusion of his six-year residency in plastic surgery at Stanford University.
“I knew immediately that this is the group I had to join,” he says. “They are all energetic, forward-thinking, great doctors.”
A Northern California native, he earned his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of California, Davis and received his M.D. degree from the Chicago Medical School.
Dr. Bates is married and has two children. A runner, cyclist and skier, he enjoys activities that offer new experiences and adventures, including travel and starting an Internet business. In his free time, he likes spending time with his family and his practice partners.
He describes himself as someone that enjoys constantly learning new things and mastering new challenges. Working in a field that is at the forefront of surgical research techniques and where surgeons operate on the whole body, rather than just one part, is what he loves about his specialty. The best part of his job, however, is the moment when he gets to meet with a happy patient after a successful surgery.
