Profile of Young Woman with Plump LipsPlump, full lips are highly attractive. They are not, however, always provided by genetics.

If your lips are too thin for your face or if you simply desire a more voluminous pout, lip augmentation with a dermal filler may be the best solution. Safer than implants and significantly more effective than volume-enhancing lipstick, dermal fillers can provide a natural-looking fullness to the lips that can last for several months without touch-ups or maintenance.

How do Lip Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers with hyaluronic acid tend to make the most effective lip fillers. This includes Juvederm, Restylane, and products within these families such as Juvederm Volbella and Restylane Silk. Once injected, the active ingredient in these fillers works to fill and plump the lips, helping to produce a more desirable appearance.

In addition to providing fullness on its own, hyaluronic acid helps to trap and maintain moisture in the lips, further enhancing and improving your lip augmentation results.

How Long do Lip Fillers Last?

Juvederm can produce results for 12 or more moths. Restylane may produce results for six or more months. Repeat treatments, spaced several months apart, can be scheduled in advance to help ensure consistent results for longer periods of time.

Are Lip Fillers Safe?

Lip fillers are safe and effective. The active ingredient, hyaluronic acid, is naturally produced by the body. The hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers is generally well-tolerated by most individuals and able to be used without complications.

There are some risks of an allergic reaction to lip fillers. Working with a board-certified plastic surgeon and being honest about your medical history can help you avoid this particular complication.

Some swelling, soreness, and lumpiness may be present for seven to ten days after lip injections. These things should self-resolve under nearly all circumstances. While extremely rare, complications or periods of extended swelling or discomfort should be reported immediately to your plastic surgeon.
